Radar-based system for controlling airport traffic

Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE), IMST GmbH has developed a radar-based, video-assisted system to control airport supply vehicle traffic that must cross the aircraft taxiway.
If the sensors detect any objects (e.g. suitcases or other goods in transit), persons or vehicles, the intersection will remain closed to aircraft until the areas has been cleared.

The initial tests, which took place at Cologne/Bonn airport and were observed by both airport experts and DFS (German air traffic control), were successful.
The data collected during the tests has been analysed in order to further optimise the system.
